Stories from across the south

Consequences

A giant writing project, inspired by a traditional party game, is taking place across the south, and the resulting work will appear not only in print but on the roof of Salisbury Cathedral on St George's Day, Tuesday 23rd April.

South Today will broadcast live from a special event, hosted by BBC South's Joe Crowley, at Salisbury Cathedral on the evening of St George's Day from 6.30pm. The highlight of the evening will be the projection of words and images onto the Cathedral's roof and walls.

Your personal story about life in the south could form part of the project and your words could appear on the roof of the Cathedral - details below.

Old game, new stories

Consequences (of the south) is a new take on an old party game.

Perhaps at school you drew a head then folded the paper and passed it to the next person to draw a body... the next person drew the legs... someone else the feet. Then you unfolded it and everyone had a good laugh.

Well we've adapted that game into a writing project, on a huge scale - and you could take part.

Poets and writers based in Salisbury, Oxford, Brighton and Weymouth are meeting and talking to the public during the weeks before St George's Day, 23rd April.

Their aim is to collect and create a view of the south that only the locals know.

If you have a personal story about life in the south that you'd like to share, contact the writers through the project website.

The anecdotes and personal experiences they discover are being adapted into short stories, each written in four sections.

Those sections are then randomly jumbled up to form new stories on a specially created website.

Visitors to the website can create as many random stories as they like, at the click of a mouse.

The traditional Consequences game usually produces bizarre results and our digital version does the same, but this time it isn't nonsense because the stories contain snippets of real people's lives.

Clicking on any part of a Consequences story takes you straight to the full version of that part of the story, in it's original form.

The project is a partnership between BBC South and Arts Council England. It forms part of Made in England which is a project looking at how the English landscape, both rural and urban, enables creativity and exchange of ideas.

Some of the Consequences stories will be projected onto the roof of one of England's most iconic buildings, Salisbury Cathedral, on the night of St George's Day, 23rd April.

Everyone welcome on St George's Day

It'll be a fantastic evening. The writers will be there, along with some of the contributors, to read the stories aloud.

High powered projectors will place the words on the roof of the Cathedral whilst images from the project will be seen on the west face.

Everyone is welcome on the night - the refreshments kiosk will be open and South Today's cameras will follow the evening from 6.30 onwards.

The stories will be published in a book featuring all of the work from the project.

A copy of the book will be presented to Oxford's Bodleian Library, the oldest library in Europe, where it will become part of their collection.
