Arbantone is Kenya's youngest and most vibrant musical genre. It's super popular with Nairobi's Gen Z-ers, and an arbantone banger, Anguka Nayo, became the anthem of the protestors who took to the streets last June over the government's controversial finance bill. But can this dance music, based on borrowed dancehall beats, with lyrics in sheng (swahili slang) win over a global audience? DJ Edu meets Ares66 and Motif da Don, producers who are trying to professionalise Arbantone and get the corporate backing needed to take it higher.
