Speaking Scots helped me find my voice – and millions listen
OutlookAvailable for over a year
Len Pennie is a Scottish performance poet and advocate for the Scots language. In the aftermath of an abusive relationship, Len took to writing poetry in Scots and English and posting them online. She also posted a series of videos called Scots Word of the Day on her social media, and her posts attracted millions of views. Aged just 24 Len published her debut collection of poetry and the book became an instant bestseller. She's recently published a second collection of poetry titled Poyums Annaw. David Main is the director of Calton Athletic, an addiction recovery support group in Glasgow in Scotland, established over 40 years ago. He talks to Outlook's Tommy Dixon about how the organisation brought him health and community and supported him in his own recovery many years ago. The group's ethos of tough love, accountability and physical exercise caught the attention of the filmmakers behind the Scottish cult-classic film Trainspotting, who visited the group before filming began and credited them as 'special advisors.'
