Outlook Mixtape: A day at the races

Outlook

Available for over a year

The Mongol Derby is billed as one of the longest and toughest horse races in the world, designed to mimic the way couriers used to take messages from the farthest reaches of the Mongol Empire on horseback. In 2013, British rider Lara Prior-Palmer made a last-minute decision to take part. And with just a few snacks, a single change of clothes, and many wrong turns along the way, she went on to win – the first woman to do so. She told Outlook’s Seyi Rhodes about her victory in November 2023. You might catch Thomas Panek running through a park in Westchester County, just outside New York City. He is confident, with a dog running alongside him. But this is a partnership that is unusual because Thomas is not leading the dog, the dog is leading him. Thomas is blind and through his running, ended up making history. Outlook’s Jason Strother recently went for a run with him in June 2019. Yara Shalaby is Egypt's first female rally driver. She's mastered the sport in some of the country's toughest desert terrain, while also putting up with a lot of detractors – people telling her that women cannot drive. In spite of that, she told Jo Fidgen in 2021, she has risen up in the sport and beaten many of her male competitors in the process.
