Outlook Mixtape: Earth, Wind and Fire

Outlook

Available for over a year

Archaeologist Becca Peixotto has been called an 'underground astronaut' because she squeezes through tiny gaps, some as small as 18 cms, in ancient underground caves. Becca's expeditions into the bowels of the earth have led her to uncover a new human-like species. She spoke to Maryam Maruf in 2017. In 1979 Günter Wetzel and his friend Peter Strelzyk were increasingly frustrated by the restrictions on their freedom imposed by the Communist government in East Germany so they developed a daring plan to fly their families to the West. Risking imprisonment if they were discovered they designed, built and tested a series of hot air balloons in secret. Günter spoke to Matthew Bannister in 2015. Loung Ung was said by her mother to be born 'with too much fire’. Separated from her family and trained as a child soldier, Loung Ung's defiant spirit helped her survive Pol Pot’s regime, which killed nearly a quarter of Cambodia’s population. Her story was originally told over two episodes of Outlook earlier this year.
