Global Business: How Free are Hong Kong’s Media?

Global Business

Available for over a year

Fake news, new technology, changing ownership – the world’s media seems to be in turmoil. Under attack from politicians, struggling to appeal to new audiences and to maintain trust, newspapers, radio and TV are in a state of flux around the world. Questions are being asked of new online media too. In a four part series, the World Service will be exploring the state of the media today. In the third of the series, Tse Yin Lee travels to Hong Kong, where freedom of speech and publication remains protected by law, under the “one country two systems” policy. But mainland China’s influence is making itself felt more and more, which leads to increasing amounts of self-censorship, for fear of severe economic consequences, or worse. Yet there are those who continue to publish as they wish. The question is, how much longer can they go on for, and how free is the press, if the truly free are the exception rather than the rule?
