The German chancellor Angela Merkel has made it clear it's up to the British prime minister Boris Johnson to find a way of reaching a deal on leaving the European Union. At his first meeting with Mrs Merkel since taking office, Mr Johnson repeated his demand that the EU scrap the backstop. The World Health Organisation says initial findings suggest that microplastics in drinking water pose a low risk to human health. The Trump administration intends to introduce new rules allowing the indefinite detention of migrant families while their asylum claims are considered.
