Cardinal George Pell loses appeal against sexual abuse convictions

Cardinal George Pell, the most senior Catholic cleric to be convicted of sexual abuse, has failed in a legal bid to quash his convictions in Australia; Sudan's military leaders and opposition alliance have formed a sovereign council to lead the country during its three-year transition to civilian rule; and Boris Johnson is set to meet German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin later, where he is expected to reiterate his call for the backstop plan to be scrapped which he says is necessary to secure a Brexit deal.
