BJP take early lead in Indian general election

Newsday

Available for over a year

Early results in India's general election suggest the governing coalition of the BJP and its allies, led by the prime minister Narendra Modi, are heading for a comfortable majority. The National Democratic Alliance is poised to get well over three hundred seats in the lower house of the Indian parliament, the Lok Sabha. Pressure has intensified for the British Prime Minister Theresa May to step down, following the resignation of a key cabinet minister, Andrea Leadsom, over the government's approach to Brexit. The United Nations General Assembly has backed a resolution demanding Britain give back control of the Chagos islands in the Indian Ocean to Mauritius within six months. The non-binding vote saw a -hundred and sixteen countries support the resolution, with only six against.
