ANC leads as South African votes counted

Newsday

Available for over a year

Votes are being counted in South Africa's election, with President Cyril Ramaphosa hoping to prevent a slide in support for the governing African National Congress. With results declared in some 70% of districts, it has won about 57% of the ballot. The United States has sharply raised tariffs on Chinese goods, in the middle of high-level trade talks between the two sides. Duties on $200 billion worth of products rose from 10 to 25% at midnight US time. Despite the political uncertainty in South Sudan, people are getting on with their everyday lives, including girls trying to go to school. While campaigners and foreign donors are pushing to get more girls into education, many families insist that only boys should get an education.
