The Venezuelan leader, Nicolas Maduro, has reacted with defiance after the head of the opposition-controlled congress proclaimed himself interim president -- with immediate backing of the US and neighbouring states. The outgoing president of the Democratic Republic of Congo has urged people to rally behind his successor, Felix Tshisekedi, who's due to be sworn in later today - despite concerns over the validity of the election result. and the family of an American citizen believed to have been jailed in Syria two years ago is making his story public for the first time after President Trump announced the withdrawal of US troops from the country. He is Majd Kamalmaz, a 61 year old pyschotherapist from Virginia, USA.
