Opposition Claims Victory in Malaysia

The party that has ruled Malaysia for its entire history as an independent country has been heavily defeated in the general election. An alliance led by Mahathir Mohamad, the 92 year old former prime minister won. The prime minister he has ousted, Najib Razak, has been the subject of corruption allegations, focussing on a state fund called 1MDB which it was claimed had been robbed of billions of dollars. Dr Jason Abbott, director of the centre of Asian Democracy at the University of Louisville, Kentucky, untangles a complex story. The White House has suggested new sanctions could be imposed as early as next on Iran. So can the arrangement survive in some form without America?
