Emgals: The Pioneering Women’s Football Team

Available for over a year

“The Emgals” was a Leicestershire women’s football team who played all the way back in the late 1960's and into the 70s at a time when women's football was BANNED. The name "EMGALS" stands for East Midlands Gas Board Ladies. The team quickly became one of the leading sides in women's football in our county. BBC Leicester’s Zoe McGrady spoke to Nigel Freestone who runs the Leicestershire Football Archive to find out more about this group of trailblazers in Leicestershire football. RING A BELL? If you know anyone who might have played, coached or been involved at all with the EMGALS, then get in touch with us. Send an email to radio.leicestersport@bbc.co.uk and Zoe will get back to you.
