The paralysed patient who walked again

NHS Stories

Available for over a year

Sylvia Cameron stunned experts after cancer led to paralysis of her legs and lower body. She was left bed-bound and unable to move or care for herself when diagnosed with paraplegic lymphoma. The Evesham woman was told she might never walk again, but stunned experts after intensive physiotherapy that she could in fact walk again. Consultant Haematologist Dr Salim Shafeek tells Elliott Webb how her condition, which required eight rounds of chemotherapy, is normally very complicated to recover from. Doctors at the Worcestershire Royal Hospital, where she was treated, alongside private physiotherapists, say she is ‘inspirational’. Image credit: Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust
