How do we measure poverty in the UK?

The World at One Highlights

Available for over a year

It's estimated that the Chancellor's decision to abolish the two-child benefit cap will lift 450,000 children out of poverty over the next four years. According to the government, 4.5m children were living in poverty in the year to April 2025 - a rise of 100,000 than the previous year. But how should we understand these figures? The World at One’s Sarah Montague and PM’s Evan Davis discuss how poverty levels are measured in the UK.
