British MP: 'We shouldn't downplay how significant this is'

Weekend

Available for over a year

The UK is expected to announce on Sunday afternoon that it will officially recognise Palestine as a state. The move would be a major change to British foreign policy in the Middle East - for decades successive governments have said it would only happen as part of a peace deal with Israel. The decision is opposed by some families of Israeli hostages and it's also been criticised by the United States and Israel . The Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has previously said recognition of a Palestinian state "rewards terror". Layla Moran, of the opposition Liberal Democrats, is the UK's first MP of Palestinian descent. Weekend's Julian Worricker asked her for her reaction to the recognition.
