Israeli reservist: 'People have no faith in the government'

Weekend

Available for over a year

Tens of thousands of people have protested across Israel against the government's decision to expand its war in Gaza. Families of hostages held by Hamas in the territory say the plan, which includes occupying Gaza City, will endanger their relatives. Until this year, most Israeli Jews thought their country was engaged in a just war against an enemy, that on October 7th 2023 launched murderous attacks and which continues to hold around twenty Israelis hostage. BBC's Shaun Ley has been speaking to an early critic -- a reservist himself who served in Gaza. Captain Yotam Vilk volunteered for that deployment in the immediate aftermath of Hamas's attack on Israel in October 2023. A year later, he spoke publicly of his doubts. He was subsequently relieved from duty. Ley asked how he feels now that an expansion of operations in Gaza has been announced.
