SeriesThe British Empire

The end of the British Empire and decolonisation

Bitesize GCSE History

Available for over a year

This is the last episode in an eight-part series on the British Empire, brought to you by BBC Bitesize History. Throughout this series, Katie and Datshiane have been exploring key moments in the development of the British Empire and the impact it had on the world. In this episode, they will focus on the dismantling of the British Empire and the process of decolonisation that largely took place after the end of the Second World War. They’ll examine how events like the Suez Crisis marked significant moments in the decline of British influence on the global stage. They will also explore how, in the new world order, Britain’s influence was further diminished as former colonies gained independence. As always, we’ll share revision hints and tips, as well as a summary of everything we’re about to cover in this episode. Remember, it might be helpful to have something to take notes on, and feel free to press stop and rewind whenever you need to. In this final episode, we’ll bring together our knowledge and understanding of the British Empire. If it helps, feel free to revisit previous episodes in the series. Suitable for Edexcel, AQA and OCR A. Presented by Datshiane Navanayagam and Katie Charlwood Written and produced by: Julian Mayers Exec Producer: Alison Vernon-Smith A Yada-Yada Audio Production for BBC Bitesize and BBC Sounds
