Nazi consolidation of power, 1933-1934

Bitesize GCSE History

Available for over a year

In this episode, Datshiane and Katie examine how the Hitler and the Nazi Paty consolidated their power and transformed Germany into a dictatorship. Looking at how, once in power, Hitler wasted no time dismantling the Weimar Republic, using both legal and political strategies to consolidate his authority. You’ll cover the February 1933 general election and how the Nazis employed widespread propaganda to amplify their message, while their paramilitary group, the SA, intimidated voters and silenced opposition parties. Katie and Datshiane will explore how the dictatorship was driven by a combination of factors including the weaknesses of the Weimar Constitution, political scheming, violence and intimidation, and a significant degree of chance and opportunity. You’ll also hear from our time-traveling reporter, who provides vivid insights from the period. Plus, we’ll introduce a helpful mnemonic to make remembering all these events easier. Suitable for AQA, Edexcel, Eduqas and OCR.
