New pregnancy app launched for South Asian women in Leicester

Ady Dayman

Available for over a year

Having a baby is supposed to be a very special and magical time for a mother. But imagine how that would feel if you had no idea what was going to happen and you couldn't understand the information being given to you by midwives and doctors? That's the very real experience for many non English-speaking women in Leicester and Leicestershire. Well now a new app has been launched by University Hospitals Leicester to provide information in five south asian languages to pregnant women. It’s called the Janam app, and uses visual aids to demonstrate medical procedures, symptoms, or treatment instructions, explained in a culturally sensitive way. BBC Radio Leicester's Ushma Mistry has been finding out what difference the app is making.
