6. Youth

Bitesize GCSE English Literature

Available for over a year

Writer Hollie McNish is joined by the beatbox poet Testament to explore the idea of youth in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. They help you prepare for your GCSE English Literature exam where you’ll need to understand and write about key themes of the play. This is a play that sets the young against the old and compares their approaches to the world. We hear about ancient grudges, contorted by anger and hatred set beside the fresh young love of two young people who are essentially powerless. It's not just the lovers. The young men we see fighting on the streets are full of youthful exuberance. It's exciting and energetic but these youths are vulnerable on the streets and under the constant threat of violence. Hollie and Testament discuss Romeo’s love life - how he falls in and out of love with Rosalind first then falls headlong for Juliet. He’s young and impulsive. And yet by the end of the play we feel that it is the young couple who have real wisdom and their elders who’ve created this tragedy. We’ll learn how to pick key words that can show the examiner what you know if you can’t quite remember the whole quotes. Suitable for: AQA, Edexcel, Eduqas, OCR More GCSE revision on Romeo & Juliet - https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zykncwx
