5. Fate

Bitesize GCSE English Literature

Available for over a year

Writer Hollie McNish is joined by beatboxer Testament to explore the idea of fate in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. They’ll help you prepare for your GCSE English Literature exam where you’ll need to understand and write about key themes of the play. They discuss people who believe in fate and how they believe their lives are run according to destiny, that there is a supernatural power beyond their control dictating everything that happens. In this play Shakespeare suggests that Romeo and Juliet's lives are governed by fate and they really couldn’t do anything to change what happened. Characters refer to 'the stars' deciding what will happen no matter how they struggle against it. The play was written and set in a time when religion was a very powerful force but there is also the idea of astrology, horoscopes and love being 'star crossed'. Learn the quotes you’ll need to show this constant struggle with fate along with tips on using them cleverly to show the examiner how much you know about this play. Suitable for: AQA, Edexcel, Eduqas, OCR More GCSE revision on Romeo & Juliet - https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zykncwx
