One of the most remarkable tales from the BBC Essex Make A Difference campaign in 2022 was that of Steph Cox, who saved her neighbour Brian Hawes from a fire in his garden in 2021. After a two-month stay in hospital, Brian moved into a care home in Tillingham, Southminster. Sadly, Brian passed away just before Christmas. His care home - The Swan residential home in Tillingham, Southminster - paid tribute to Brian, saying "what a pleasure it was" to take care of him, adding that, "Brian came to us in respite and made the decision to stay full time, he made many friends with staff and residents and he will be sadly missed." BBC Essex speaks to Steph Cox, who was neighbour to Brian for more than 30 years when he lived in Maldon, and who still visited him at The Swan in Tillingham.
