'There's over 500 people now on waiting list to swim'

Rakeem Omar

Available for over a year

We reported on the closure of Snyd Community Association Pool in Bloxwich a few weeks ago. It's doors have remained shut for around 5 months after the boiler broke down - and now a crack in the pool is expected to cost around £100,000 to fix - and Dudley council says it just can't afford that. A petition to save it has now got nearly 1,500 signatures. Where are those hundreds of people going to go? We're now hearing about major staffing issues at our leisure centres. Two pools - each 5 miles away from Snyd pool have both frozen their waiting lists, and scaled back family sessions and lessons because of a chronic shortage of both lifeguards and swim teachers. We know that 30-40 swim teachers are needed just to maintain services in the Black Country. Our reporter Laura Chiverton has been speaking with staff at Bilston's Bert Williams Leisure Centre.
