Can Lula save the Amazon?

Latest News Picks

Available for over a year

Luiz Inácio da Silva - known as Lula - is now set to be the next president of Brazil. He defeated the incumbent Jair Bolsonaro with the narrowest of margins, in an election that highlighted how polarised politics has become in the South American country. Lula and Bolsonaro offered very different visions for the future of Brazil. One of the biggest dividing lines was over the protection of the Amazon rainforest, which has seen years of devastating deforestation. Lula has promised to protect the Amazon - and the indigenous communities that call it home. While this was Brazil's election, the outcome will affect us all. The destruction of the Amazon has a big impact on global temperatures and the looming climate crisis. So are hopes misplaced, and is there still time to turn things around? For the latest episode of 5 Minutes On, our South America correspondent Katy Watson heads into the Amazon to ask communities and politicians if they think Lula can save the rainforest.
