The Dunmow Flitch Trials - an Essex tradition

Sadie Nine

Available for over a year

After not being able to take place as planned in 2020, the famous Dunmow Flitch Trials finally returned for 2022. A longstanding tradition in the county dating back to the year 1104, married couples from anywhere in the world have to satisfy the judge and jury of six maidens and six bachelors. Couples have to convince the counsel that they have 'not wisht themselves unmarried again'. The prize: a flitch of bacon commemorating their victory. BBC Essex's Sadie Nine was one of the counsel during the trials, and on her radio show on Monday she spoke to the three winning couples - Mike O'Reily & Zanna Voysey from Great Dunmow, Chris & Helen Figg, originally from Great Dunmow but now New Zealand, and Desmond and Minette Carter from the United States.
