Falklands war: 'I was almost the 4th civilian casualty'
Available for over a year
Of the 907 people killed in the Falklands war in 1982 – three were civilians. Tim Miller was very narrowly a fourth. In fact, had a small wooden shed not been between him and where a British jet’s 1000lb bomb landed, then it’s likely that he’d have been the first civilian death of the Falklands conflict, 20 days before the others. Sue Whitley, Doreen Bonner and Mary Goodwin died after the four-bedroomed house where they had taken refuge was bombed on the 12th June 1982. A computer glitch on a Royal Navy frigate was blamed for the misguided missile attack. The previous month, Tim had narrowly survived an attack in a friendly fire incident on an airstrip next to the farm building where he was living. He, later, went on to befriend the British pilot who dropped the bomb. Ft Lt Mark Hare was even a guest at his wedding a few years later. He’s always been forever grateful for the troops that liberated his country.
