Fear and survival: Being LGBTQ in Iraq

Newsday

Available for over a year

For Iraq’s LGBTQ community, life is difficult and dangerous. When the Islamic State group controlled part of the country, they released horrific videos showing gay men being thrown from the top of high buildings. But even though that threat has passed, many hazards still remain. Every day LGBTQ people fear physical violence, or being murdered if their secret is uncovered. Sexual assaults are also common, and for many, the toll on their mental health is severe. Our Middle East correspondent Anna Foster reports from Iraqi Kurdistan. Image: Two men walking in Iraq.
