Leading Palestinian journalist shot dead

Newsday

Available for over a year

Al Jazeera says its journalist Shireen Abu Aqla has been killed by the Israeli defence forces during a raid in the occupied West Bank town of Jenin. The Qatar-based news channel said Shireen Abu Aqla was shot in the head. Video on social media shows the Palestinian reporter wearing a flak jacket bearing the word 'Press'. Another journalist with her, Ali Samodi, was also wounded. Newsday spoke to the Palestinian Ambassador to the UK Dr Husam Zomlot, who knew Shireen. "She was a household name - a prominent journalist who spent her life covering Israeli brutality. She was clearly wearing her press clothes. She was targeted and we demand justice and accountability." The Israeli military says it is investigating whether the fatal shot was fired by Palestinian gunmen.
