Resurrecting the first act of remembrance - The Pearl Appeal

Steve Harris

Available for over a year

Annie Kings, a jeweller from Gillingham in Dorset, has resurrected The Pearl Appeal which was the first act of remembrance. Three years before the British Legion held their first Poppy Appeal, the Red Cross launched a Pearl Appeal. Pearls were donated in memory of soldiers. They were then turned into jewellery which was sold to raise money to help wounded soldiers. Annie Kings, from Gillingham, says she was sent thousands of pearls when she decided to recreate the appeal, whilst in lockdown in 2020. She's been raising money for the Royal British Legion's Poppy Appeal.
