How exclusion bias affects important data sets

Digital Planet

Available for over a year

Across the world, many people have limited or no access to the internet. The number differs wildly from country to country. As a result, these people aren't represented in data sets from the web. Some of these data are used to influence important decisions in areas such as recruitment and allocating development funds. Computer scientist Prof Ricardo Baeza-Yates discusses the consequences of excluding large swathes of people in these data sets. (Image: Global business, big data, Credit: Getty Images.)
