Featured Artist: Alika

BBC Introducing - London

Available for over a year

West London native Alika is a multi-genre artist and songwriter who has been making waves across the capital since she won the MOBO Unsung Award in 2016. From a young age, Alika was involved in musical theatre and dancing, and has always been drawn to the thrill and escape of performance. However, it wasn’t until she began a GCSE Music Technology course that she started to get stuck into songwriting and crafting her sound. A product of London’s youth club scene, something that seems to belong to a distant past in this age of streaming and online collaboration, Alika’s sound is clearly rooted in the old school styles and attitude that the scene fed. Nostalgic, catchy and full of attitude, tracks like latest single ‘Karma’ are reminiscent of the 90s pop, garage and rare grooves Alika grew up listening to. Citing her main influences as Missy Elliott, Ms Dynamite, Eve and Lauryn Hill, her music conjures up images of low cut jeans, crimped hair and chokers, and we’re certainly not mad about it. FFO: Aaliyah, Missy Elliott, Lauryn Hill
