Featured Artist: Kay Young

BBC Introducing - London

Available for over a year

Kay Young is a rapper, singer and producer hailing from Brockley, South London. Drawing on elements of jazz, hip hop, funk and soulful house, Kay’s sound is captivating and unique. It is no surprise that her glorious, velvety vocals and innovative production caught the attention of Jay Electronica and earned her a signing with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation. Having grown up going to church and hearing her father hone his skills as a guitarist, it is all about the musicianship for Kay. Beginning each track with a drum machine, she infuses them with her fearless creativity and energy, paying close attention to every detail. With influences spanning from Janis Joplin and Kanye West, to Jill Scott and Kendrick Lamar, Kay’s music is fundamentally British and her fresh sound is standing her ahead of the crowd already. Kay released her EP 'Middle Matters' in August 2020, which is all about growing and moving towards something better. Much like her ever-evolving sound, Kay’s aspiration to push herself to do and be better makes her an incredibly exciting up and coming artist. With a new album in the works, this is a multifaceted artist whose future looks very bright. FFO: Connie Constance, Noname, Jill Scott
