Human chain rescues Durdle Door swimmer

Steve Harris

Available for over a year

A dramatic rescue unfolded at Durdle Door beach when a person got into difficulty in the water. Dozens of quick-thinking beach-goers linked arms to form a human chain to help rescue the swimmer, putting their own lives at risk. Holidaymaker Jennie Bell witnessed the incident and told BBC Radio Solent: "there were some brilliant people on the shore, who were shouting to this person in the sea 'swim now with this wave' - and the next thing we know there was this lovely chain of people on the beach stretching into the sea, as much as they dared, trying to throw body boards over to this person." Eventually, one rescuer managed to dive into the water and grabbed the person in difficulty. An emotional Jennie went on to say: "it was lovely because the whole beach was stood up and was clapping, and it was amazing".
