The text - written in 1938 by US poet Frederic Prokosch - is part love-song and part farewell. Barber captures the ambiguity of the emotions with an 'unstable' vocal line and hesitant piano accompaniment. It's hard to know if the lover is asleep or dead and Barber's music here is uncertain too! Composer: Samuel Barber Performer: Kitty Whately (Mezzo) Performer: Simon Lepper (Piano) Recording date: 01 September 2018 Date of broadcast: 26 July 2019
