In this moving conclusion to the epic opera, Wotan is sending his daughter Brunnhilde into an endless sleep surrounded by a magic and impenetrable fire. It shows Wagner’s genius for developing musical leitmotivs – short musical themes which represent characters, objects or moods - and weaving them into the libretto. The third act ends in love and tenderness, played by a huge orchestra complete with 8 horns and 6 harps.
