Maybe the finest musical gift to a lover. Tchaikovsky spent the Swiss summer of 1878 alongside violin prodigy Iosif Kotek; the young violinist advising the older composer. When Kotek refused to perform its premiere, Tchaikovsky - distraught - broke with him. Now considered one of the greatest violin concertos, the first outing in 1881 was a failure with one critic saying 'the violin was not played but beaten black and blue.' Composer: Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky Performers: BBC Philharmonic Orchestra Performer: Vilde Frang (Piano) Conductor: Gianandrea Noseda Recording date: 18 May 2010 Date of broadcast: 07 April 2014
