Boulanger, a prolific talent cut short (she died aged only 24) wrote three choral works based conventionally on psalms but it's her use of unusual scoring - in this case choir, brass ensemble, timpani and two harps - which set her aside from her contemporaries. The maturity of this composition belies her youth: she was 22 when she completed this.
