Judith Weir's 'Black Birdsong' is certainly evocative of birdsong, with its woodwind trills and falling motifs reminiscent of birdcalls. The small orchestra of woodwind and strings accompanies a vocalist, who makes use of vocal slides and wide intervals to further reflect the aviary mood. The music is light and tender, and although more dissonant strains creep in from time to time the music is never grating or difficult to listen to.
