Tavener’s work was composed in memory of his friend Athene Hariades, a young woman who was killed in a cycling accident. The sadness he felt is reflected by the choir lamenting monophonically over a ground bass – a constant single-pitch note heard in the bass acting as a drone. Composer: John Tavener Performers: BBC Singers Conductor: Peter Philips Recording date: 15 September 2017 Date of broadcast: 25 October 2017
