‘I’ve seen in thought the Soul go up, and have written my heart’s blood into the score,’ said Elgar of his epic oratorio inspired by Cardinal Newman’s poem of the same name. One need not be a religious person to appreciate the epic sweep of Elgar’s depiction of a simple man’s journey into the afterlife. As he said of the role of Gerontius himself, ‘I’ve not filled his part with church tunes and other rubbish, but a good healthy full-blooded romantic remembered worldliness.’ Composer: Edward Elgar Performers: BBC Symphony Orchestra Performers: BBC Symphony Chorus Performer: Alice Coote (Mezzo) Performer: Stuart Skelton (Tenor) Performer: Alan Ewing (Bass) Conductor: Sakari Oramo Recording date: 16 May 2018 Date of broadcast: 21 May 2018
