The bold opening timpani roll and dramatic piano flourishes are a statement: here I am. Just another writer of songs and piano pieces, Grieg was almost unknown before the première of this concerto in 1868. Everyone knew him after the performance. The work shows his interest in Norwegian folk music and it appears in many films, comedies, musicals and computer games.
