This quartet is the only surviving string quartet of Grieg's - an earlier one is lost, and a later one remained incomplete at the composer's death. There is a wide kaleidoscope of moods in the work, especially the deep lyricism of the second movement and the rustic folk influences of the scherzo. Greig's string quartet made a great impression on composer and audiences alike.
