Shostakovich's Second Piano Concerto was written for his son Maxim's nineteenth birthday. The work was written to be accesible for developing young pianists, and consequently Maxim premiered the work during his graduation at the Moscow Conservatoire. Unusually for Shostakovich, the concerto is incredibly fun and cheerful, and though rather more straightforward than the composer's symphonies, has always enjoyed huge public success. It can be heard in films such as 'Fantasia 2000' and 'Bridge of Spies'. Composer: Dmitri Shostakovich Performers: BBC Symphony Orchestra Performer: Benjamin Grosvenor (Piano) Conductor: Marin Alsop Recording date: 12 September 2015 Date of broadcast: 12 September 2015
