Violin Concerto No. 1 in A minor, Op 78

Experience Classical

Available for over a year

Shostakovich's First Violin Concerto was written during a period of extreme pressure in the Soviet Union. Composers were accused by the state of writing 'formalist' works that did not glorify the Soviet Union. For this reason, Shostakovich shelved his work, only releasing it once Stalin had died. The concerto took the suffering of his world and changed it into something beautiful and profound. Composer: Dmitri Shostakovich Performers: BBC Philharmonic Orchestra Performer: Renaud Capucon (Violin) Conductor: Juanjo Mena Recording date: 09 December 2017 Date of broadcast: 14 December 2017
