This is the story of a returning soldier whose tales of his ‘heroic’ exploits abroad can only be fantasy. Yet he keeps his audience captivated with his charisma and personality. With its prominent use of percussion, Kodaly disrupted the Germanic conventions dominant in Hungary at the time. His use of cimbalom, a Hungarian folk instrument, gives it a distinctly Hungarian edge. Composer: Zoltán Kodály Performers: BBC National Orchestra of Wales Conductor: Jac Van Steen Recording date: 03 September 2011 Date of broadcast: 03 September 2011
