In October 1929 Hindemith stepped in to give the first performance of Walton’s 'Viola Concerto', after his intended soloist rejected it. Walton was in Hindemith’s debt, which he repaid with this. The theme is taken from Hindemith’s cello concerto, which Walton develops masterfully weaving in a reference to the banned opera Mathis der Maler for good measure. Composer: William Walton Performer: BBC Philharmonic Orchestra Conductor: Juanjo Mena Recording date: 25 July 2014 Date of broadcast: 25 July 2014
