Dramatic and unique amongst English symphonies composed in the 20th Century, Walton’s first symphony stands alone, much like the composer did in British musical life for much of the 20th Century. The orchestra pulsates with a natural rhythm throughout. The influence of Sibelius is never far away, but like everything Walton did, he channels that inspiration to create a symphony of real originality. Composer: William Walton Performer: BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra Conductor: Martyn Brabbins Date of broadcast: 18 February 2018
