Prokofiev said of his 5th symphony, composed during World War 2, that he intended it to be, ‘a hymn to free and happy Man, to his mighty powers, his pure and noble spirit.’ It contains much of what makes some of Prokofiev’s music so enduringly popular; namely a mixture of the dramatic and romantic, with memorable melodies, humour, and a strong percussive element leading to exciting and powerful climaxes. Composer: Sergei Prokofiev Performers: BBC Symphony Orchestra Conductor: Sakari Oramo Recording date: 17 August 2018 Date of broadcast: 27 August 2018
