3 Songs, Op 10 (ii, Sleep now)

Experience Classical

Available for over a year

The second song of Barber's 'Three Songs op. 10', first published in 1939, the text is taken from James Joyce's collection of poems 'Chamber Music'. A purposeful beginning gives way to stabbing, controlled spikes from the piano while the mezzo-soprano sings "The voice of the winter, is heard at the door". Not a happy song. Composer: Samuel Barber Performer: Kitty Whately (Mezzo) Performer: Simon Lepper (Piano) Recording date: 01 September 2018 Date of broadcast: 26 July 2019
